Glow Maps
Glow maps, also known as self-illumination maps, are used to make surfaces appear like they are emitting light. They tend to use an "additive" mode for determining the glow amount - areas that are pure black will remain unchanged on the original texture, while brighter areas will appear to glow and increase the brightness of the original texture.
